Abstract

SILVARES, Edwiges Ferreira de Mattos  and  SOUZA, Carmen Lúcia. Prevention and behavioral treatment of elimination problems during infancy. Temas psicol. [online]. 2001, vol.9, n.2, pp. 99-111. ISSN 1413-389X.

Two elimination disorders - enuresis and encopresis - whose impact on child development is unquestionable, specially considering socialization and self esteem aspects, are discussed concisely. First they are approached according to their concepts, etiologies, and ways of behavioral treatment. Next, attention is given to the ways of dealing with toddlers during toilette training in order to preveni these problems. In this sense, some suggestions to sphincter control training are offered to parents or care takers as an example of what can be done preventively. Such samples are extracted primarily from what has been discussed on the first part of this text, which is based on a literature review.

Keywords : enuresis; encopresis; child behavior therapy; prevention.
