Abstract

This study analyzed 55 theses and dissertations about "identification", "characterization" and "diagnosis" from a total of356 studies about individuals with special that were needs conducted between 1981-1998, by graduate students from 21 graduate courses in Education around the country. The results indicated that the majority of the studies are categorial as well as that mental deficiency is the most studied condition, followed by hearing impairment condition, autism, giftedness, physical handicap, and visual impairment. Questions about identification and diagnostic for the admission to special education programs were the most studied subject followed by the description and characterization of handicapped individuals specificities, basically to characterize their performance and development. Besides trying to compile the collected data and to allow the produced knowledge to be more accessible to the researchers and professionals of this field, the study tries to point out the trend and gaps of such production, identifying priorities in the area of investigation.
