OLIVEIRA, Denize Cristina; FISCHER, Frida Marina; MARTINS, Ignez Salas  e  SA, Celso Pereira. Adolescence and work: facing the present and waiting for the future. Temas psicol. [online]. 2003, vol.11, n.1, pp. 02-15. ISSN 1413-389X.

This study aimed to describe the social representations of studying and working by infantile and juvenile subjects, and to analyze the established relationships between those two practices, in two cities of the State of São Paulo. They answered to a questionnaire 778 adolescents, between 11 and 18 years old, workers and non workers, who were students from 5th to 8th series of the fundamental level of teaching and from 1st to 3rd series of the medium teaching in the public schools of their municipal districts. They were also conducted 18 focus groups, counting on the participation of 200 young workers and non workers. The analysis of the free evocations, which were included in the questionnaire, was made trough their distribution among four quadrants, whose ensemble pictured the structure of each representation, complemented by a similitude analysis. For the description of the contents of the representations, a lexical analysis of the discursive material of the focus groups was accomplished, through the software Alceste 4.5. The results indicate that the relationship between working and studying is structured in a contradictory way involving the dimensions of moral, knowledge and consequences of work, which were mediated by an evaluation of their roles in the construction of the future. They were observed sharp differences between the representations held by young workers and non workers. As a conclusion it is pointed that, in spite of the fact that working represents a risk for proper scholarship, it is legitimated or justified by the own youths' representations
