Abstract

DELL'AGLIO, Débora Dalbosco. The coping process in children and adolescents: adaptation and development. Temas psicol. [online]. 2003, vol.11, n.1, pp. 38-45. ISSN 1413-389X.

This article presents a theoretical revision about coping process in children and adolescents, emphasizing its adaptative function during their development. The need for a child specific stress-coping theory is discussed, taking into account both, the characteristics of the social context, and of the developing person. The main theoretical models and the children’s and adolescent’s coping strategies are presented, focusing on gender and age differences in the development of strategies, and on participants interactions in case of stressor events. The need for new research that could consolidate the evidences about the adaptive role of strategies used in adverse situations is discussed, contributing to the search of an explanatory model to the coping process in children and adolescents.
