Research on neuroplasticity has implications for conceptual models of structural-functional correlations in the brain, as well as for understanding mechanisms of functional recovery. Reactivation of afferents is one of the most relevant mechanisms involved in synaptic plasticity. The Mathew‘s principle predicts that if more personal and interpersonal resources are available, both before and after brain damage, then a better recovery will be expected. Three non-excludent conceptual models are currently used in neuropsychological rehabilitation: restitution, substitution, and compensation. The approach of choice depends on knowledge of factors related to the lesion characteristics, functional recovery and individual prognostic factors. In general, restitution is more important at the beginning of the rehabilitation and compensation gains salience gradually over the course of the process. A developmental approach may be useful, helping to identify self-fulfilment pathways which remain open and personal goals to pursue.
