Abstract

MAIA, Joviane Marcondelli Dias  and  WILLIAMS, Lucia Cavalcanti de Albuquerque. Risk and protective factors for child development. Temas psicol. [online]. 2005, vol.13, n.2, pp. 91-103. ISSN 1413-389X.

A study was aimed at reviewing the existing literature on risk and protective factors for child development, as well as to highlight the need for professionals, who work with children and adolescents to know the above factors, so as to have a more effective practice, acting in a preventative way towards children and adolescents' behavior problems. The vast literature concerning risk factors is emphasized. Nevertheless, child development studies need to include protective factors with the same emphasis it is given to risk ones, in order to promote resilience. The literature review described here gave basis for an intervention program to assess training of Brazilian Child Protection Workers, teaching them to identify risk and protective factors for child development.
