FEITOSA, Fabio Biasotto; MATOS, Margarida Gaspar de; DEL PRETTE, Zilda A. P.  y  DEL PRETTE, Almir. Social support, socioeconomic level, and school-social adjustment of Portuguese adolescents. Temas psicol. [online]. 2005, vol.13, n.2, pp. 129-138. ISSN 1413-389X.

Characterizing the behaviors and life styles of adolescents is conceived as a condition to plan intervention strategies to prevent or to attenuate risk factors for well-being. Exploring the data base collected by Matos et al. (2003), this study aimed to check associations between demographic (socioeconomic level) and environmental/individual variables (social support, problems of behavior, school enjoyment and academic performance). In this study, 412 (average age=15,12) adolescents from different schools in Portugal completed a questionnaire on life style, health and socio-demographical data. The results showed that academic achievement positively correlated to teachers’ attention for students, peer acceptance, school enjoyment and socioeconomic level. On the other hand, academic achievement negatively correlated to behavior problems and difficulty to talk with the parents. These relations and their implications for educational interventions and social politics are discussed.
