Abstract

MASSIMI, Marina. Psychology and culture from historical perspective. Temas psicol. [online]. 2006, vol.14, n.2, pp. 177-187. ISSN 1413-389X.

The article approaches a comparison between psychology and culture, from a perspective of historical studies, considering the presupposition that the history of psychological knowledge in the Brazilian culture can contribute to understanding this comparison, since it provides psychology a better cultural and social foundation. The purpose is to deepen the understanding regarding the comparison between Psychological Processes and Cultural Phenomena. To do this, it is necessary to clarify what is understood by "psychology" and "culture". To ponder about this comparison, we will analyze the positions regarding this matter formulated by authors of modern and contemporary psychology and by authors of modern psychology history, as well as other authors who currently mark psychology education in Brazil and in the world. If every culture is the scope of the meanings that men attribute to existence and reality, then it also contains the meanings of psychic life: there are ways to assign meanings to specific psychic phenomena of a certain culture, which can be equal or different in other cultures. Thus, in conclusion, there is a need to increase the understanding regarding psychological knowledge, not only by including this knowledge in its scientific domain, but also the psychological knowledge consider as inherent to the culture
