CIRIBELLI, Elina Barros et al. Intervention in waiting room for chemical dependant outpatient: characterization and effect evaluation. Temas psicol. [online]. 2008, vol.16, n.1, pp. 107-118. ISSN 1413-389X.

The objective of this paper was to study the importance and benefits of a waiting room intervention; to characterize the socio-demographic aspects of the patients; to evaluate anxiety and depression symptoms and to survey the substance most often used. A total of 45 patients, diagnosed with chemical dependency participated in the survey. All of them answered the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and a social demographic and motivational questionnaire. Of the participants 84.44% were male, average age was 40.22 years, 44,44% were married or in a stable union and 62.22% had not completed elementary school. Substances most often used were cigarettes (64.44%) and alcohol (37. 77%) and 71% of the participants presented significant anxiety and/or depression symptoms. The participants believed that the waiting room was an important place where they could obtain information, meet people with the same problem and identify risk situations. This study highlights the importance of forming support groups and of the investigation of co morbidity in the treatment outcome of chemical dependent individuals.
