Abstract

COSTA, Janelise Bergamaschi Paziani  and  VALERIO, Nelson Iguimar. Antisocial personality disorder and substance use disorder: characterization, comorbidities and challenges in treatment. Temas psicol. [online]. 2008, vol.16, n.1, pp. 119-132. ISSN 1413-389X.

The current work aims at presenting data from the literature in respect to Antisocial Personality Disorder and its relationship with Substance Use Disorder. The scarce data indicate coexistence in a significant percentage of the general, clinical and penitentiary public however conclusive information about which types of associations exist has not been demonstrated. Individuals with Substance Use Disorders are generally underdiagnosed for Antisocial Personality Disorders; patients are treated for these diseases in isolation and coexistence is not considered. Because of its characteristics and wide-ranging approach, the model based on the cognitive-behavioral theory, which already contributes to the individual treatment of disorder, may be a relevant resource in a simultaneous approach to both of them. However, further research in the area is necessary as it is the awareness of healthcare professionals to concomitant intervention for both diseases.

Keywords : Anti-social personality disorder; Drugs; Illegal substances disorder; Cognitive-behavioral theory.
