Abstract

SILVA, Daiane Soares; ROCHA, Eliana Porto  and  VANDENBERGHE, Luc. Psychological treatment for chronic pain. Temas psicol. [online]. 2010, vol.18, n.2, pp. 335-343. ISSN 1413-389X.

The present study intends to identify content dimensions in group therapy for chronic pain. Fifteen women between 30 and 58 years old participated in this study. Three groups were formed and twelve sessions mixing psycho-educational and psychotherapy protocol were applied. The sessions were recorded, transcribed and submitted to a grounded theory analysis, in order to identify the dimensions of the treatment process. Four categories emerged: Living with pain; Daily life problems; Relationship with the therapists and In-vivo interaction between participants. In each of these dimensions, it is possible to describe the quest of the participants to adjust their ways of coping with emotions, with their past, with interpersonal relationships and with their self perception. The four categories support a proposal for group therapy that does not only provide ways to cope with pain, but mobilizes a variety of personal and social variables that influence chronic pain.

Keywords : Group psychotherapy; Chronic pain; Coping with pain.
