Abstract

DELGADO, Paulo. Attachment experience and foster care: reflections, myths and challenges. Temas psicol. [online]. 2010, vol.18, n.2, pp. 457-467. ISSN 1413-389X.

Attachment theory analyses the interactions and interdependences in human development, and highlight the necessary conditions to build a «secure base», from which a child feels confident to explore the world around and responding to the overtures of strangers. This perspective is particularly well suited to study the transitions occurring in the lives of children in foster care: separation from parents and the challenges of an unknown environment, living in a new home in an alternative life context. This approach is also valuable in orienting intervention in practice, preventing risks and promoting children's integration and development. This article analyses some pieces of research about attachment and Foster Care and questions some myths created towards those relationships.

Keywords : Family; Attachment; Child Abuse; Foster care.
