Abstract

CHIUZI, Rafael Marcus; PEIXOTO, Bruna Ribeiro Gonçalves  and  FUSARI, Giovanna Lorenzini. Conflict of generations in organizations: a social phenomenon interpreted by Erik Erikson's theory. Temas psicol. [online]. 2011, vol.19, n.2, pp. 579-590. ISSN 1413-389X.

The following paper is a study of Erik Erikson's life cycle theory and the eight phases in which crisis are faced by human beings (basic trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame and doubt, initiative vs. guilt, industry vs. inferiority, identity vs. identity diffusion, intimacy and distanciation vs. self-absorption, generativity vs. stagnation and integrity vs. despair and disgust). Aiming at the study of the generations social phenomenon and the conflict among them, through the human psychosocial development theory proposed by Erik Erikson, a theoretical study was conducted among the active labor market generations focusing on individuals with ages between 18 and 60. Previously published bibliographical material about the theme was used, articulated to the human vital circle concept as well as the dynamic and continuous development regarding the differentiation of psychographic profiles of different mapped generations. Through this theory, analysis are made regarding the social phenomena of the new generations present in the work environment (veterans, baby boomers, gen X and gen Y) and the conflicts between them. As final considerations, the study points out that it is possible to obtain, with some restrictions, a consistent theoretical background to the generations conflict in organizations based on Erik Erikson's theory, formulated in the 1930´s decade
