Abstract

This work aimed to characterize sociodemographically two riverine contexts, discussing their similarities and distinctions. 250 people participated in the survey, 125 residents of each community, 22 families of the community of the river and 24 families of Araraiana Island Combu. The Araraiana river is located about 4 hours by boat and 15 the Combu island 15 minutes from the tail of the capital, Belém . The instrument used was the Sociodemographic Inventory (SDI), consisting of items related to: the identification of residents, household aspects, family income, city of origin and duration of residence. The study received the approval of the ethics committee from the consent of the participants of this study. The results showed that the proximity to the urban area is a determining factor for the difference in the way of life of these communities. Despite the structural similarities in vegetation and topography, there are differences in the physical well-being, education and the survival strategies identified in the way of life.
