Abstract

This article presents the program "I can solve problems" - ICPS, which aims to develop cognitive abilities of interpersonal problem solving to prevent impulsive and aggressive behavior in children. Organized into four sections, the article describes: the original program, its Brazilian adaptation; evidence of effectiveness of intervention in schools; experience of clinical application with information on applicability and limitations of the program in this condition. In schools, the program was effective in reducing inappropriate behavior, increase relevant solutions in problem situations and increase of social skill behaviors. At the clinic, positive effects were identified in the following conditions: customers comprised of children 6-10 years with learning difficulties associated with behavior problems; intervention led by professionals with clinical experience in caring for this specific clientele, guidance accompanying families. Moderating effect of family environment and persistent problems for a portion of children are issues that require further research.
