Scientific literature about marital violence indicate possible association between this occurrence and family of origin experiences. In this manner, the article aims to conduct a systematic review of national and international literature in the period 2006 to 2011, when it comes to the issue of marital violence and previous family of origin experiences. It was conducted a survey of articles indexed in the databases Academic Search Premier, ISI Web of Knowledge, MEDLINE, LILACS and SciELO, using the keywords "'family of origin' or 'intergenerational transmission'" and "'marital violence' or 'partner violence'". There were identified a total of 120 articles available for only two databases. For the analysis, we considered all the full-text articles available in online format, that come from academic journals, classified according to the year of publication, country, theme and method. The texts are indexed in more than one database were considered only once, totaling 62 articles. They were described according to publication year, country, objectives, method, participants, measures and main results. The results point to the preponderance of international production, with emphasis on absolute the USA (62.91%). In Brazil, was identified only two, showing significant gap in the national literature. There is still a predominantly quantitative approach (84.1%) to prioritizing work results at the expense of procedural or theoretical understanding. Many studies identified that family of origin experiences might predict marital violence, but the shortage of scientific literature to consider marital violence as a complex phenomenon, determinate by different factors, reveals the need to expand research in the area.
