The aim of this study was to investigate the expectations of high school students from lower classes regarding their future as a professional. The sample was composed of 200 high school students, male and female, from two public schools of Rio Grande do Sul. Data were gathered all together in classrooms through a questionnaire composed by open and closed questions. The data from open questions were submitted to content analysis and the data from closed questions were submitted statistical analysis. Results demonstrated that the majority of the students think about the future of their professional life. Their thoughts are related not only to the effort they must make to achieve professional and personal success and to improve their financial conditions, but also to their desire to work in something that gives them satisfaction. In general, the participants showed to be optimistic about their future as a professional and hopeful to achieve success in their personal and professional life. On the other hand, the students recognized they need to struggle to achieve their goals and enjoy the satisfaction work can provide, once they noticed the negative aspects associated to the instability of the labor market.
