This research aimed to screen the depression in patients with chronic renal failure undertaking hemodialysis treatment, and to relate the socio-demographic variables to the depression. Furthermore, it was sought to contrast the groups with and without depressive symptoms and check which features are presented with more intensity for each of these groups. It is a descriptive and quantitative study consisting of forty eight patients, with an age range between 18 to 66 years (M = 45.5, SD = 3.8), performed in a public hospital in the state of Paraiba. The data was collected through a socio-demographic questionnaire and the Beck Depression Inventory, both being submitted to the SPSS-19.0, for further analysis using descriptive and inferential statistics. It was concluded that 56.3% of the participants showed symptoms of depression and that the hemodialysis period was positively correlated with this psycho-affective disorder. Items such as pessimism, guilt, suicidal ideation, irritability and weight loss didn't show statistically significant difference between groups with and without depression. The characteristics that showed the higher intensity for the group without depressive symptomatology were the items referring to insomnia, fatigability, irritability, difficulty to work and weight loss. The group with depressive symptomatology presented higher mean scores on punishment, self-image change, weight loss, difficulty to work and decreased libido. It is expected that the results found might contribute with the development of strategies which minimize the appearing of depression in patients undertaking hemodialysis.
