ABSTRACT 'Núcleos de Apoio à Saúde da Família' aim to raise the resolution, range and scope of the Family Health Strategy and it is structured in nine strategic areas, among which mental health. Through it, psychologists occupy a prominent space in teams whose work should prioritize the matrix support. This research aimed to analyze the psychological practice in those health teams in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, regarding to adopted role models and their consistency with the principles of public health system of Brazil considering the level of complexity involved. 24 semi-structured interviews with those psychologists were held, in 16 health micro-regions. After thematic content analysis, the main results show that psychologists perform socio-educational activities, home visits and clinical care. There is no clarity on their role in those health teams but issues related to their work are discussed and the need for different role models, but not the traditional, to the profession.
