Abstract

PEREIRA, Annelyse dos Santos Lira Soares; DIA, Susana Maria Pires da Silva; LIMA, Tiago Jessé Souza de  and  SOUZA, Luana Elayne Cunha de. Beliefs about homosexuality and the prejudice against homosexuals in the workplace. Temas psicol. [online]. 2017, vol.25, n.2, pp. 563-575. ISSN 1413-389X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.9788/TP2017.2-10.

This study aims to understand the prejudice against homosexuals in the workplace analyzing the role played by individuals' beliefs about the nature of homosexuality. We hypothesize that beliefs about the nature of homosexuality underlie the expression of homophobic attitudes and discriminatory behavior in the workplace. Take part in this study 169 heterosexual workers from five Portuguese companies, of both genders (mostly part of them are female, 68%) with a mean age of 32.8 years (SD= 8.29). The results showed that greater individuals' support for ethical and moral beliefs about the nature of homosexuality predict prejudice against homosexuals in the workplace. Moreover, men expressed a higher rejection of proximity and expressed more negative emotions towards homosexuals than women participants express. The discussion addresses the importance of beliefs about the nature of social groups to better understand the organizing principles of prejudice and discrimination against minority groups in the context of labor relations.
