Abstract

ARREGUY, Marília Etienne. Entertainment through pain by the way of the abject in violent pop movies. Cad. psicanal. [online]. 2012, vol.34, n.27, pp. 43-64. ISSN 1413-6295.

I intend to analyze the prevalence of violent ethos as a cultural symptom in violent cult movies. The spectator's pain, one that is inherent to our contemporary discomfort, is relieved in a kind of masochistic and passive sublimation, and the spectator manages such pain via the abject spectacle. The process refers to the spectator's attempt at overcoming angst through his exposure to a morbid detritus, one that ambiguously provokes an entertainment through the projection of aggression and alienation on the immediate pleasure proportioned by the sight of a tragic death while demanding necessary reactions of disgust and terror that will ultimately divert the spectator's gaze.

Keywords : abject; pain; violent pop movies; entertainment; passive sublimation.
