Abstract

BARBOSA, Ana Maria Ferrara de Carvalho et al. The new communication technologies: issues for psychoanalytical practice. Cad. psicanal. [online]. 2013, vol.35, n.29, pp. 59-75. ISSN 1413-6295.

This paper discusses the role of new communication technologies in contemporary psychoanalytic practice. The main focus is on issues arising from the study and discussion of clinical cases that surpass the traditional setting. Noteworthy is the intensity with which the current technological apparatus participates in daily life, and therefore in the analytical process. Instant messaging (sms's, whatsapp), video calls (Skype), e-mails, social networking, video games, etc, now constitute forms of contact with the world and with the analyst, thus becoming object of analysis. To what extent the changes in the temporality of contemporary life "widen" the clinical space? Up to which point transference is altered in times of virtuality and excessive immediacy?

Keywords : Psychoanalytic practice; communication technologies; contemporaneity; temporality; analytical setting; transference.
