The aim of the paper is to analyze the importance of an ethics of care during early childhood, particularly at an institutional level. Based on qualitative research developed in a day care center/shelter in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with babies aged between 6 and 18 months, the interaction between the babies and the care agent was observed. There we analyzed the role of the institution in early childhood, especially when the family environment is socially deprived. The focus of the research is the relationship between the professional care taker and the baby, and is considered essential, as far as a healthy development in infancy is concerned.
