Abstract

MUCIDA, Angela  and  PINTO, Jeferson Machado. Symptoms of olds?. Cad. psicanal. [online]. 2014, vol.36, n.30, pp. 45-60. ISSN 1413-6295.

Frequently hear the expression "symptoms of aging" as if, from a certain age on, especially after the middle-age years, people would inevitably start expressing symptoms that include them in the group of "the elderly". While psychoanalysis cannot operate with the "pathologies" of old age, it aims at treating the symptoms in a subjective way while engaging with the subject. This article proposes the discussion of the idea of symptoms of aging by relying on some Freudian and Lacanian indications on the function of the symptom and its alliance with an ever unique kind of enjoyment. There is no uniformity of enjoyment and, therefore, there are no symptoms pertaining to the elderly per se.

Keywords : Enjoyment; unconscious; lalangue; symptom; sinthome; old age; real.
