Abstract

WEISSMANN, Lisette. Migration/exile and the loss of the mother tongue. Cad. psicanal. [online]. 2017, vol.39, n.37, pp. 185-206. ISSN 1413-6295.

Starting with the concepts of migration and exile, the article does a review of the migratory process / exile of Sigmund Freud. It addresses topics concerning language and the loss of the mother tongue. It focuses on the obstacles that appear when people need to make use of a foreign language with the obligation to abandon the mother tongue, in order to be able to communicate in the country of migration's language. The grieving process for the loss of culture, language and country of origin appears as a condition that enables the possibility of developing and establishing the migration process. Differences are made between a migration process and the exile.

Keywords : Migration; Exile; Mother tongue/Foreign language; Sigmund Freud.
