Abstract

LONGO, Monique Marques. The election of totalitarian leaders in the 21st century: a Freudian reading. Cad. psicanal. [online]. 2019, vol.41, n.40, pp. 189-201. ISSN 1413-6295.

Freud in 1914 postulated a kind of choice of libidinal objects as support or anaclitic determined by the resemblance to the protective parent or to the mother who fed him. In 1921, the author added that the choices of leaders we elect throughout our lives, which produce homogeneity for the masses, are the result of a transference of feelings and idealizations to the one we establish as the Ego Ideal. Aiming at setting a dialogue between psychoanalysis and political philosophy in order to think about the psychic vicissitudes of subjects who elect political leaders with totalitarian characteristics despite all the threat they pose to democratic systems of government.

Keywords : Narcissism; Ego Ideal; Totalitarian Governments; Political Philosophy.
