In this paper, I try to make a critical and close reading of "The double", by Otto Rank. His main discussion axes are listed as follows: Ego splitting, the relation between narcissism and death, and the phallocentric impasses and rivalry present in the literary motif of the double, the mirrors and the shadows. Besides, I propose revisiting the double in terms of the oedipal scene, which was only loosely mentioned by Rank. An approximation with "A child is being beaten" (FREUD 1920/2010) will provide important elements to both discussions. Finally, I try to answer a question proposed by Harry Tucker Jr., editor of the book, about the feminine double.
