Abstract

ARREGUY, Marília Etienne. Authority in spite of authoritarianism?. Cad. psicanal. [online]. 2020, vol.42, n.43, pp. 137-160. ISSN 1413-6295.

The present essay deals with the notion of authority from an extended psychoanalytical conception. The heart of the argument goes against the attempt to think about the concept of authority in an essentialist approach, since it appears opaque and limited to understand authority as an incarnated fact determined both culturally and by experience. The authoritarian, vertical structure, contradictorily combined with the imperative of jouissance, idealized by society, upsets the political and pre-political exercise of a more horizontal and effective authority. Taking into account the notion of compulsion to repeat, every exercise of authority is originally contaminated, that is, it is liable to be affected by an archaic, tyrannical and superegoic authority.

Keywords : Authority; Superego; Discontents; Psychoanalysis; Education.
