Abstract

SOUSA, Rafael Lopes de. The hip hop movement: the anti-cordiality of “the repulblic of the bros” and the esthetics of violence. Imaginario [online]. 2006, vol.12, n.12, pp. 251-278. ISSN 1413-666X.

I seek, in this paper, to analyze and clarify the ambivalent nature of certain juvenile conformations which, with brilliant display schemes and with an unarguable capacity to create and undo appearances, make the understanding of its organizations, and thus, its intentions difficult. I aim, thus, to bring to light aspects of the inner logic that, as a matter of fact, guide the course of such conformations. I privilege, for such, an analytic sample about the hip-hop movement and its most outstanding feature, the “rap”; that, by questioning the decay and or the banishing of the public space, offers clues that allow the re-thinking of certain established values in contemporary Brazil. The radical and many times intransigent posture of the hip-hop movement caused the media to brand it a violent organization. This paper has the goal to shed light on the original and constitutive aspects of this group, seeking this way, a re-evaluation of its nature and its own specificities.
