Abstract

VIECILI, Juliane  and  MEDEIROS, José Gonçalves. The coercion and its fallout in the relationship between teacher and student. PsicoUSF [online]. 2002, vol.7, n.2, pp. 229-238. ISSN 1413-8271.

This paper intends to examine the behavior of students with histories of school failure (WSF) and students without histories of school failure (WTSF) and the coercive and reinforcing behavior of teacher in relation with each group of students. Ten children, ranging 8 to 12 years old, attending a public elementary school, and tree teachers, were the participants of the study. The data was collected through the direct observation of behavior inside the classroom, with report of categories per time interval and the student was the observation focus. The results showed the use of differentiated coercion with WSF, and the positive stimulation with WTSF. The differentiated use of coercive and reinforcing contingencies with both WSF and WTSF students, and its effects in the academic and non-academic behaviors of both groups of students are discussed.

Keywords : School failure; Coercion in the classroom; Interaction teacher-student.
