The aim of this work was, to explore the depression index in young students, according sex, age and school type, and, to determine relationships between academic achievement in Math and Spanish. Instruments used to collect data were the Children’s Depression Scale (CDS) and achievement tests used in the Argentine operative for educational quality evaluation. Sample was 888 students, 7º and 9º grade of private and public elementary schools. General results indicate low and negative correlations between depression indicators and academic achievement in Math and Spanish. However, a detailed analysis in function of sex, age and school type, indicate that this association depend of these variables and the effects appear only in women and public schools students.
