This research aimed to investigate the influence of different linguistic patterns in written language acquisition.. Subjects were 65 first grade students at a public school. The material used to measure levels of linguistic variation was applied at the beginning of the school year. Reading and writing assessment tests were applied both at the beginning and the end of the school year so as to evaluate acquisition levels. Statistics analysis showed negative and significant correlation between initial levels of linguistic variation and final performance in reading evaluation. These results suggest that different linguistic patterns can difficult the written language acquisition if they aren’t well working by the teachers that need to know and to use the linguistic and sociolinguistic knowledge in their literacy practice.
