Abstract

This research studied the correlations of the Brazilian version of the Self-Directed Search (SDS) of John L. Holland with the Factorial Personality Inventory (IFP) that assess a group of basic needs conceptualized by Henrry Murray. Participants were 81 teenagers mainly aged in the range of 16-17 years of with 76.8% were women, participating in a career counseling program. SDS Internal consistency coefficients were in the .89-.94 range. The significant correlation with IFP scores were in the .22 to .39 range and were observed in: Type R with Heterossexuality, Type I with Exhibition and Social Desirability; Type A with Nurturance, Intraception, Deference and Affiliation; Type S with Nurturance, Intraception, Social Desirability and neg. corr. with Aggression; Type E with Dominance, Achievement, Exhibition, Aggression, Autonomy, Heterossexuality and neg. corr. with Order; and Type C with Endurance. These results were discussed concerning reliability and validity of the Brazilian version of the SDS.
