SOUSA, Édiva de Oliveira  and  MALUF, Maria Regina. Reading and writing abilities at the beginning of schooling. Psicol. educ. [online]. 2004, n.19, pp. 55-72. ISSN 1414-6975.

The aim of this research was to verify the relationship between reading and writing abilities in Portuguese Brazilian speaking children at the beginning of schooling. We have as a hypothesis that there will be discrepancies between reading and writing abilities in different levels of literacy. The participants in this study were 73 children six to eight year old, 38 boys and 35 girls. Tasks of writing, reading and comprehension of words and phrases were individually applied. Results showed that children who had more advanced learning levels could read better than they could write. This result has been discussed in relation to specialist literature.
