Resumen

GONCALVES, Maria Augusta Salin. Ego Identity, moral conscience and stages of development: perspectives for education. Psicol. educ. [online]. 2004, n.19, pp. 73-89. ISSN 1414-6975.

The purpose of this article is to present a few reflections on the formation of the Ego identity, relating this concept to theories of moral development. During the development of the ego identity, which takes place at different levels, learning processes occur, being enabled by the maturation of cognitive structures and by motivational and affective processes, which are the foundation for interpersonal relations. Knowing the possibilities and limits of development and of moral formation can help teachers to deal better with conflicts that arise in their daily work at school, so as to enable the students to construct a moral identity at a post-conventional level. Educating to form the ego identity means providing education aimed at autonomy, an autonomy that opens the way for communication with one’s inner nature, and is supported by a freedom that imposes limits on itself.

Palabras clave : Ego identity; Moral development; Autonomy.
