Abstract

The text presents some of the results of a research study on the care function in early childhood education, relating it to moral psychology. Inaccuracies in the use of the word "care" are identified in academic and governmental texts that elaborate policies for the area. The author investigates the meaning of "care" based on the changes in its function throughout the history of crèches and preschools in Brazil and its polarization with the educational function; this is followed by a brief account of the etymological origin and the different meanings attributed to the word. The meaning analysis, together with the connections of the term with moral psychology theories, enabled the adoption of a concept that synthesizes the cognitive, affective and moral dimensions of care.
