The education in non industrial fishing families, besides transmitting knowledge about reality, caretaking and promoting human development has the specificity to focus the processes of teaching fishing activities. This work aimed to investigate beliefs and meanings of education in non industrial fishing families in respect of the aspects of knowledge and roles for the activity of fishery. It were chosen at random two fishing families in the city of Rio Grande/RS. Three generations of each family were investigated and participated of this study. The method was the ecological engagement and the data were qualitatively analyzed following the steps proposed by the grounded-theory. The results point to the linearity of generational transmition of the knowledge on fishing and the definition of men and women roles concerning this activity. The results focus that education in these families have been contributing to the continuity of the fishery culture which brings light to the role of the family in forming social individuals.
