Abstract

This study aimed to conduct a systematic review of the literature, considering articles published between 2010 to 2014, which addressed the relationship between family environment and school performance among elementary and high school students. It were analyzed the country of origin, the factors of family environment investigated and the way school performance has been evaluated and methodological aspects. The the articles were selected in the MEDLINE, SciELO, ASP (EBSCO), Science Direct, PsycINFO and Web of Science data bases. 70 articles were considered for analysis, according to the eligibility criteria. The studies were carried out in 20 different countries; the family environment factors were organized in seven dimensions. School performance was evaluated in diversified manners, with emphasis on school grades and standardized test scores. All studies used a quantitative research approach, prioritizing the use of standardized instruments. The need for greater investment in qualitative or mixed character studies was found, as well as the need to expand the concept of school performance and triangulation of data between different participants and sources of information. This review helped to understand how this issue has been addressed in national and international contexts, thus representing a valuable source of information for professionals interested in it.
