This article aims to discuss the possibilities for the physical education to contribute to the development of theoretical thinking of individuals in school education, a condition essential for the development of the human psyche identified with the formation of culturally instituted complex behaviors and dependent on the school contents transmission teaching representative of the maximum chances of apprehending reality in thought, as advocated by the historical-critical pedagogy and the historical-cultural psychology. The text is part of a research we are doing intended to demonstrate that the essentially educational task of physical education at school lies in the transmission of scientific concepts, not daily and beyond the practical application of body movements, concepts which are identified with the more developed contents of historically accumulated scientific knowledge within the body culture, without which the development of human higher mental functions results compromised.
