Abstract

TUNDIS, Amanda Gabriella Oliveira  and  MONTEIRO, Janine Kieling. College education and teacher illness: a study at a public university. Psicol. educ. [online]. 2018, n.46, pp. 1-10. ISSN 1414-6975.

The risk to the mental health of a worker may arise from different dimensions and according to clinical psychodynamics of work it is possible to draw a profile of the work effects on the disease process. This research aimed at identifying critical factors in the work context of public college education teachers associated with mental health risks. The participants were 52 teachers, aged between 23 and 58 years, from a public university in the Amazon region. A socio-demographic and labor questionnaire was used, as well as the Inventory on Work and Illness Risk, focusing on the context of the work, pleasure and suffering experiences and damages to health. In the results it was verified that the work context was evaluated as critical. Factors related to pleasure were satisfactory for professional achievement. In relation to the suffering the professional exhaustion was scored as more critical. Physical and psychological damages were also identified as critical and social damages as bearable. These results indicate the need to think about alternatives to prevent the risk of mental illness at work and also to talk about the work context experienced by the teachers of public universities.
