The efficacy of a training program in basic principles and techniques of behavior modification, administered to teachers of a public elementary school in the country of Barra do Garças, Mato Grosso, was investigated. this training consisted of: a) Theoric orientation, in which the basic principles of behavior modification were taught, through lectures, reading units, exercises and discussion of cases which occur in the classroom; b) Role playing; and c) Feedback and social reinforcement, after observation of the teacher's behavior in the classroom. The results showed an increase in the correct utilization of reinforcement, punishment and extinction, and a decrease in the inadequate use of the procedures. The suggestions provided to the teachers during feedback (prompting, social reinforcement and planning of recreation contingent on academic activities) were followed by the teachers.
