This article intends to draw considerations about the origins and the conceptions of Hospital Residence Program (HR), to emphasizes the importance of the hospital institution for the health profissional specialization, in special for the clinical psychologist, with the Residence in Psychology (RP). This specialization modality took more interest after 1998, when the Conselho Federal de Psicologia (CFP) promoved a national discussion about it. Consequently, on enphasizes the role of the CFP to order the implantation of the RP. Finaly, on describes the guide principles, the organization and the function of the Psychology Residence of the Psychology Institute/University Hospital Pedro Ernesto (IP/HUPE/UERJ), iniciated in 1993, thats aim to contribute to the divulgation and to the discussion of this specialization modality in all over the country.
