This article of descriptive and critical character, introduces the Psychooncology area as an integrant of health psychology context, including its scientific and professional objectives and main topics. The text includes, yet, a thematic main synthesis studied by psychooncology and introduced in Brazilian congresses of this area. It discusses the need of scientific research implementations, with methodological rigidity, useful to promote favorable conditions of specialized assistance to patients submitted to medical treatment and their families, as well as specific opportunity formation on theoretician-technique implementations for the area.
