This study aims to present some basic assumptions of the sociocultural approach to human development. This presentation will relate those assumptions to the process of starting day-care center, which is an institution each day more present in our society. This study intends to discuss some developmental aspects such as social interaction and the social, historical cultural aspects of development, and to relate them to the mother-baby relationship and the process of starting day-care center. This will be done based mainly in the ideas of Vygotsky and authors influenced by him. Because they are essential basis of the process of person construction, considering the life of relationship and social exchanges, some notions such as zone of proximal development, construction zone, intersubjetivity and developmental contexts are discussed.
