Abstract

The article presents a summary of a monografy presented in the undergraduation program in Psychology at the UFPE (Federal University of Pernambuco). It contains a theoretical discussion on the concept of identity and proposes elements for a survey on professional identity, considered as inserted in the recognition game, constituted of two poles, that of self-knowlegde and that of alter-recognition. Teachers of elementary schools in Recife participated in the study. The data are gathered based on interviews carried out individually among the teachers and on journalistic material. It is suggested that the teachers experience moments of professional identity conflict that do not compromise their personal relations with work, but make it difficult to establish collective identities.
