Abstract

REGO, Fabiana Lins Browne  and  CARVALHO, Glória Maria Monteiro de. Language acquisition: a contribution for the discussion on autism and subjectivity. Psicol. cienc. prof. [online]. 2006, vol.26, n.1, pp. 12-25. ISSN 1414-9893.

The purpose of the present work is an attempt to relate children's language at an early stage of their linguistic course to teenage autists' utterances. Such attempt raises questions about the so polemic debate involving autism and subjectivity, taking for granted that the autist occupies a subjective position toward language. In this respect, one can propose that, although autistic utterances are made up of echolalic blocks, in some points there seem to be breaks and combinations of such blocks, in a way resembling the process occurring in "normal" children's speech. Those breaks and combinations might indicate that, at some time, the autist would be affected by the language functioning. Therefore, he/she would not live beyond language scope, i.e., he/she would not be in a non-human world.

Keywords : Autism; Subjectivity; Language acquisition.
