This paper presents the results of a survey made at a public institution in Rio de Janeiro, a pioneer center for autistic and psychotic children and adolescents: NAICAP (Núcleo de Atenção Intensiva à Criança Autista e Psicótica), from the Phillipe Pinel Institute. The goal of this survey is to supply subsidies for the creation and implementation of assistance projects in mental health for adolescents and it was developed due to the shortage of statistical data in this area. We have analysed the assisted adolescent population from 1986 to 2003. The children who turned into adolescence during the treatment at NAICAP and adolescent patients who looked for the service were the ones who took part in this survey. The paper quantifies the geographical origin, the diagnosis, the patients' previous information and the length of time spent at the institution. We have also described the entrance door procedures, a common practice used for welcoming the patients and their relatives in accordance to psychoanalytical guidance. The investigation indicates the need to create new services and also to develop further adolescent projects.
