Abstract

QUEIROZ, Edilene Freire de. Terror and compassion. Psyche (Sao Paulo) [online]. 2004, vol.8, n.13, pp. 25-31. ISSN 1415-1138.

Terror and perversion are manifestations of the human being. Drives, in its discourtesy and excess, trigger perversions. The reaction to them is expressed by means of terrible sensation of fear, of repulses and aversion. Trying to find the just measure for drives, the Greeks experienced them, by identification of a dramatic script containing tragic stages. The aim was to provoke in the audience an experience of the pathos as a tragic fundamental experience, enabling one to acquire self- knowledge through suffering, organized within the borderlines of horror and compassion.

Keywords : Compassion; Excess; Greek's tragedies; Suffering; Compassion.
