Abstract

CARDOSO, Marta Rezende. The bondage to the “other” in the borderline states. Psyche (Sao Paulo) [online]. 2005, vol.9, n.16, pp. 65-75. ISSN 1415-1138.

In this paper the borderline states are studied, among other features, in the light of a counterpoint between narcissism and auto-erotism. Thus the author tries to develop and in a way to overtake the classic idea of a “narcissistic fault”, assumedly prevalent in these pathologies. Notions like support and helplessness are important tools in this reflection whose starting point is the issue of borders in psychoanalysis in itself. A remarkable bondage to the inner other is supposed in the borderline states, and this would be beyond the indiscrimination to the object.

Keywords : Borderline states; Narcissism; Auto-erotism; Helplessness; Otherness.
