Abstract

LOUREIRO, Ines. Notes on aesthetic fruition derived from an experience of being on the brink: the Stendhal Syndrome. Psyche (Sao Paulo) [online]. 2005, vol.9, n.16, pp. 97-114. ISSN 1415-1138.

This paper explores metapsychological aspects of aesthetic fruition. Although my theoretical framework is located within a Freudian perspective, this paper moves away from his strict conceptions of art. It challenges the boundaries of the aesthetic phenomenon and inquires into the Stendhal syndrome: an experience of being on the brink. Stendhal syndrome is a disorder that befalls on tourists visiting Florence and other art- oriented cities. This paper exposes some of the paradoxes present in the common aesthetic experience which are organized around the capture/disengaging axis.

Keywords : Aesthetic experience; Stendhal syndrome; Aesthetics and metapsychology; Psychoanalysis and art; Freud.
